Text 1: Letter to Selma in which you tell her what you would do if you inherited part of her money. January 15, 2002
(Text written in class)
Dear Selma,
How are you? I hope you are fine.
Here in the Himalaya, its very very cold. Its snowing. Round of my cave, there are at least 8 meters snow.
Last week, unfortunately, my mammuth died. He was killed by a avalanche.
You are very old now, and I think its time make a will.
I wanted to say that if you spend me your money, i would be able to buy a new mammut. They arent very cheap! I also would renovate my cave and buy some new weapons to hunt the climbers in my region.
Now Im going to bury my mammut.
Hope I see you soon.
All the best!

Writing (test unit 8), February 25, 2002
Instructions:
Think back of the beginning of the drama. There is the possibility that you could inherit a lot of money from your old aunt Selma in Florida. Write a text of about 100-150 words in which you speculate about a possible inheritance from her. Use correct forms of conditionals. Please count the words and write the number under the text Use linkers in your text (at least 3-5)!
I think its nearly impossible that I inherit all, or a part o Selmas money. If I were her favorite nefew, she maybe would give me the money. But I didnt see her for a while and althouth I never ganve her a birtday present.
But if I get the money, I would buy a big house with a big garden and a wonderful view over the lake of Zurich.
When I really will inherit the money, I have to do something. Maybe I must give her a call to ask her how she is?
Anyway; whether I get the money or not, I wouldnt be happier than now. (113 words)
Writing (test unit 9) April 16, 2002
Instructions:

- One of the nicest houses/flats you have lived in or spent your holiday in (explain why this was so good, where it was, who you shared it with etc.)
- Describe where you plan to live in the future. Say in what type of house you want to live and why.
- Finally, describe a dream house/flat/mansion of yours if you didnt have to worry about money. Say where it would be, what there would be in/around it and why you would want to have it that way.
You can invent everything!
Please count the words and write the number under the text.
Once, in the summer holiday, we were in a nice, little house near the "Garda-See in Italy. It wasnt very big inside, but outside was a swimming pool. From there, you could see the whole lake with the boats and the water-skier. I think that was fife or six years ago. I was there with my family.
In the future, I plan to earn as much money as possible and Ill have two or three houses.
One of them will be on the east coast of Florida withe a big garden, a private beach, some Palm trees and a garage for my cars. The other must be in the middle of a big city. It may be a flat in the 100st floor of a tower. The third, I think, could be here on the lake of Zurich. But it must be a house withe a garden and a little beach. But I dont think that Ill ever have so much money. If not, i would buy at least the house on the lake of Zurich. (179 words)

Instructions from the coursebook Countdown to First Certificate:
The following comment was printed in an international magazine: Winning a fortune doesnt always make people happy.
Your teacher has asked you to write a composition on this subject, saying if you agree or disagree.
Write your composition (120-180 words).
In many countries, people play lotteries. They spend a lot of money only to play, but i think, most of them have never won more than maybe 10 Pounds.
In my opinion, playing lottery is very funny. Its very exciting to open the lottery ticket and see if you have won or not. Mostly, you havent won. Or sometimes maybe a little bit.
If i ever win a fortune, I would be very happy. At first, I would go to the next BMW garage to buy a car, and then, I would go on a long trip through the whole world.
On the other hand, you can loose a fortune buying the lottery tickets, and there more ways to make much money without gambling.
Teachers comment:
You have partially succeeded in using the structure of the text as given in the book. However, §2 should refer to ideas about what people could do in general with a win rather than only you yourself.
In §3, list more negative aspects of a lottery windfall.
Finally, add a fourth paragraph!
